Chapter Twenty-Four

When Nick arrived at the Emergency Room, they told him they had admitted Dani. His stomach fell. How bad was she? He’d raced up to her room, worried about what he’d discover. Seeing her lying in the hospital bed, bruised, pale, and bandaged, had his heart stopping before it raced again. He stepped into the corridor before she noticed him, and stood against the wall, giving a thought to whether he’d need another Xanax. This would be a bad time for a panic attack, although it wouldn’t be surprising. He practiced the square breathing techniques, and when he had himself under control, he went into the room, giving her the roses and telling her about Otis.

She barely looked at the flowers. “How did Otis end up with you?”

He listened for the accusation in her tone but didn’t hear any. “I was late for the meeting—which you know—and was heading to the hotel to see if I could salvage anything when I passed the accident scene.” He explained how Martin had told him what happened and suggested he take Otis. “He’s settled in with Presley. A little jumpier than usual.”

“That’s to be expected,” Dani said and visibly relaxed. He was going to have to savor the small smile she gave him because it could be the last one for a while. “Thank you. I know he was scared after the crash, and it got worse when they took me away. Being with Presley will help.”

“I’m going to let the two of you talk,” Rosie said as she stood and gave Dani a kiss. “I’ll be back after the breakfast rush tomorrow, but if you need me sooner, call.”

“I can’t. Still don’t have my phone.”

“I’ll see what I can do about that.” As she walked by Nick, she whispered, “Don’t screw this up.”

It was probably too late for that, but he’d do what he could. He walked over and took the seat Rosie had vacated next to the bed. “How bad is it?”

“Not as terrible as you might think, or apparently looks, but they’re being cautious in case I lost consciousness. I get to be on some fun painkillers for the night. Rosie thinks it’s a good idea because, as she was quick to remind me, I tend to rush things.”

When she heard why he missed the meeting, she was going to think getting involved with him again was another thing she’d rushed. “Is there anyone you want me to call for you? Or do you want to use my phone?”

“I’d like to call Laurel. She may have already heard what happened through the town grapevine, but it will be good to talk to her.”

Nick put in his passcode and handed over the phone. “Anything I can get you?” He probably sounded oversolicitous, but he needed to be of some help.

“Maybe a vase for the flowers?” So she had noticed. He was glad he stopped to get them.

He left the room to give her some privacy and, he admitted to himself, so he didn’t have to hear her talk about what happened.
